Nnamdi Kanu Gives Conditions for Trial Resumption; FG Kicks Back

The Nigerian government has expressed opposition to the conditions presented by the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, for the resumption of his trial.

During the proceedings at the Federal High Court Abuja on Wednesday, Kanu expressed willingness to accelerate the prosecution of the charges against him, contingent upon the fulfillment of his conditions.

Presenting his demands through his lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu outlined three conditions necessary for the trial to proceed. Firstly, he insisted on the restoration of the bail previously granted to him, asserting that its revocation was based on false pretenses by the Federal Government.

Secondly, Kanu called for the setting aside of the arrest warrant issued against him, challenging the government’s claims that he had breached bail conditions and fled the country.

Lastly, he demanded unrestricted access to his legal counsel, as mandated by law, emphasizing the importance of proper legal representation in his defense.u

Expressing the government’s stance, counsel for the Federal Government, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, urged the court to dismiss Kanu’s conditions, labeling them as frivolous, vexatious, and baseless. Awomolo argued that since the court had previously rejected Kanu’s bail application, it could not overturn its own decision.

He suggested that Kanu’s recourse should be to approach the Court of Appeal to challenge the rejection of his bail request.

The proceedings, presided over by Justice Binta Nyako, are ongoing as the legal teams continue to present their arguments in this contentious case.
