NLC Strike Disrupts Super Eagles’ Preparations: Iwobi, Onyeka, Ajayi, 5 Others Delayed
The Super Eagles’ training camp in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, faced a significant disruption as eight key players, including Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka, were unable to join the squad due to the ongoing Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) strike. The strike has brought domestic flights to a halt, stranding the players within the country.
Despite this setback, Manager Finidi George led a rigorous training session on Monday morning at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, involving fifteen players. The two-hour workout included fitness and shooting drills, alongside tactical exercises, as the team prepares for their crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying match against South Africa.
Players such as Maduka Okoye, Semi Ajayi, and Calvin Bassey, though already in Nigeria, are yet to join the team in Uyo. The Super Eagles media team confirmed that these players are affected by the travel disruptions caused by the strike.
The training schedule for Monday evening has been adjusted to allow for rest and recovery, with no further on-field activities planned. The Super Eagles began their preparation for the double-header against Bafana Bafana and Benin Republic over the past weekend.
Among those present at Monday’s session were Chidozie Awaziem, Alhassan Yusuf, Ibrahim Olawoyin, and Kelechi Iheanacho, along with others. The team remains focused on overcoming these challenges as they gear up for their upcoming fixtures.
