NLC Prepares for Nationwide Strike as FG Plans Talks on Monday

State chapters and affiliated unions of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) are on standby for a possible nationwide strike as they await the outcome of a crucial meeting scheduled for Tuesday. This development comes following the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum given to the Federal Government to address concerns related to the recent fuel subsidy removal.

The organized labor movement had previously staged a two-day warning strike to emphasize their demands. After this, the NLC issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government, which reached its deadline on Friday. As a response, the NLC has now called for an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) to be held virtually on Tuesday at noon.

The NEC meeting is expected to determine the labor movement’s next course of action. In a notice dated September 22, 2023, the NLC’s General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, emphasized the significance of attendance for the presidents, general secretaries, and treasurers of its affiliate unions, stating, “Your attendance (at the meeting) will be of utmost importance.”

State chapters of the NLC have expressed their readiness to mobilize for a strike should the NEC decide to proceed with one. The Federal Government, in a last-minute effort to avert a strike, is planning to hold talks with labor leaders, possibly on Monday. Sources within the government stress the importance of preventing an economic shutdown during these challenging times.

Despite the government’s appeals for understanding, labour leaders remain resolute in their demands. Workers in various states, including Ekiti, Gombe, Sokoto, Plateau, Benue, Kano, Niger, Zamfara, Yobe, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Adamawa, Kaduna, Abia, Kebbi, Taraba, Oyo, Ondo, Katsina, Lagos, Edo, and Delta, have affirmed their readiness to participate in the strike should it be sanctioned by the national leadership of the NLC.

The outcome of the NEC meeting on Tuesday will be pivotal in determining the fate of Nigeria’s labour movement and the potential nationwide strike. Observers are closely watching developments as both labor unions and the Federal Government seek a resolution to the ongoing dispute
