NIMC Clears Air on New National ID Card

In a recent development, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has clarified details regarding the planned introduction of a new National Identification Number (NIN) in the country. The initiative, announced by the Federal Government last week, aims to simplify and streamline the identification process for citizens.

In a statement released on Friday and signed by Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, the Commission emphasized that the new National ID Card will serve as a single, versatile General Multipurpose Card (GMPC). This unified card is designed to eliminate the need for multiple separate cards, offering a variety of functionalities including payments, financial services, government interventions, and travel.

The GMPC is being developed in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System to ensure robust and secure financial services. It will be powered by the AFRIGO card scheme, an indigenous scheme supported by NIBSS.

Citizens can request the new ID card using their NIN through the self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks. The card will be issued in line with existing protocols for Debit/Credit card issuance and can be collected from designated centers or delivered to applicants for an additional fee.

NIMC’s statement provides reassurance about the comprehensive and convenient nature of the new ID card, highlighting its potential to enhance various aspects of everyday life for Nigerians.
