Nigerians Struggle with Soaring Living Costs: Calls for Action from President Tinubu Grow
Six months into President Bola Tinubu’s tenure, Nigerians grapple with an escalating cost of living, exacerbated by the removal of subsidies. According to the World Bank, Nigeria’s poverty rate reached 46%, affecting 104 million citizens in 2023.
Inflation soared to 28.20% in November 2023, fueled by increased prices of essential items, as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Household spending took a hit, with rising costs of oil, fat, bread, cereals, fish, potatoes, yam, fruits, meat, vegetables, milk, cheese, and eggs.
January price check reveals staggering increases in staple food costs, such as rice (N45,000 to N60,000 per 50kg bag), beans (N60,000 to N70,000 per 50kg bag), and yam (N800 to N3,000 per tuber). Other items, including noodles, garri, potatoes, and vegetable oil, have also experienced significant price hikes.
Nigerians express growing concern, with citizens like Ekong Eduok and Chibuzo Nwoke emphasizing the need for policies to ease the burden on the masses. Rising petrol costs, coupled with insecurity affecting farming, contribute to the challenging circumstances.
President Tinubu’s reassurances of the government’s capability to address these issues have met skepticism. Some citizens, like Mr. Abdul Sani, criticize the government’s handling of economic challenges, citing corruption and a lack of tangible improvements.
In response, an economic expert, the Chief Executive Director of Economic Associates, stresses the urgency of stabilizing the foreign exchange market. The expert highlights the detrimental impact of exchange rate volatility on business decisions, inflation, and overall economic growth.
Looking ahead to 2024, the expert acknowledges the government’s budget direction, indicating efforts to mitigate adverse effects on living costs. However, the critical question remains: how soon will the government address the volatility in the foreign exchange market to foster economic growth and alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians?
