Nigerians Paid N1.04 Billion in Ransom Over One Year, Report Reveals

Nigerians paid a staggering N1.048 billion in ransom to kidnappers between July 2023 and June 2024, according to a recent report by SBM Intelligence. The report highlights the alarming rise in kidnapping incidents across the country, with 7,568 people abducted during this period.

Despite kidnappers demanding a total of N11 billion, only about 9.5% of that amount was paid, reflecting the financial strain on victims’ families and the economic realities faced by many Nigerians. The report, titled “Grim Reaping,” provides an in-depth analysis of the security challenges in the country, pointing to the resurgence of Boko Haram in the North East, armed gangs in the North Central and North West, secessionist violence in the South East, and gang-related issues in the South West.

Notably, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) recorded the highest ransom demands, with Lagos and Kaduna following closely. The South East emerged as the region with the highest ransom payments and successful collections. The report also sheds light on a disturbing trend of in-kind ransom payments, including food, drinks, cigarettes, and motorcycles, depending on the region.

In terms of the impact, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Katsina states reported the highest numbers of incidents and victims, with Zamfara alone accounting for 1,639 victims in 132 incidents. The violence accompanying these kidnappings has also escalated, with 1,056 deaths recorded across 1,130 reported incidents, indicating a growing lethality in these crimes.

Former DSS Director Mike Ejiofor described the situation as a significant threat to Nigeria’s economy and called for urgent action, including a state of emergency on insecurity. Ejiofor emphasized the need for better border security and increased citizen participation in combating the rising wave of kidnappings.

The report underscores the urgent need for comprehensive security reforms and greater collaboration between the government, security agencies, and local communities to address the escalating crisis.
