Nigerian Youths Launch New Movement to Challenge Political Establishment
A group of dynamic young Nigerians has launched a new movement aimed at dismantling the nation’s entrenched political class and revitalizing its governance. The initiative, known as The Movement (or Tafiyar Matasa in Hausa), was officially unveiled on Wednesday in a virtual ceremony after months of preparation.
The movement is composed of professionals from diverse sectors, united by a shared vision of rescuing Nigeria from what they describe as a state of decline due to years of corrupt and ineffective leadership.
During the launch, Bulama Bukarti, the chief convener of The Movement, delivered a passionate address outlining the group’s mission to reclaim the country from what he called “clueless, corrupt, and selfish leaders” who have failed the people for decades. Bukarti emphasized that the primary objective of the movement is to foster national unity, economic prosperity, and a return to effective governance.
“Today, we stand at a crossroads. Our beloved country, once known for its boundless potential, now finds itself shackled by a political system that no longer serves its people,” Bukarti declared. He further criticized the current political class, accusing them of replacing visionary leadership with corruption and prioritizing self-interest over public service.
Bukarti noted that Nigeria faces significant challenges, including insecurity, inflation, unemployment, and widespread dissatisfaction with the political establishment. However, he stated that The Movement represents a new dawn, with the goal of replacing the old order and giving Nigerians the future they deserve.
He called on young Nigerians to join the cause, stating, “The Movement is not just a political movement; it is a clarion call to every Nigerian youth and citizen who believes in the future of our country. We aim to fight corruption, restore security, reduce inflation, and make life affordable for all.”
Emphasizing the broader scope of The Movement, Bukarti said it seeks not only political reform but also societal transformation. He stressed the need for new leadership standards, urging Nigerians to embody integrity in both private and public life.
“We are here to inject new blood and energy into the Nigerian political system, to restore integrity, and to build a country that works for every Nigerian, not just the privileged few,” he said, adding that the group’s efforts will engage Nigerians from all walks of life to create a more united and prosperous nation.
Other speakers at the event echoed Bukarti’s sentiments, expressing frustration over decades of mismanagement and the negative impact of corruption on the Nigerian people. They emphasized that successive administrations have failed to prioritize the welfare of citizens, leading to widespread disillusionment.
Key figures in The Movement include notable Kano-based lawyers and activists Abba Hikima and Ummulkhairi Getso, as well as musicians like Naziru Ahmad. The team also includes legal professionals, such as the group’s secretary and legal adviser Jude Daniel, and other prominent figures like Fatima Aliyu and Peter Bright.
As Nigeria faces growing economic and security challenges, The Movement represents a significant push by the youth to chart a new course for the country. The group has called on young Nigerians to step up and take control of their future, with the aim of leaving behind a nation that future generations can be proud of.
In his closing remarks, Bukarti reinforced the urgency of action: “The time for new leadership, new ideas, and new hope is now. Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for Nigeria.”
