Nigerian University Student Allegedly Abducted, Killed by Host Community Members

Maxwell Okeke, a student at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, was reportedly abducted and killed by members of the host community.

Sources indicate that the ordeal began with a minor motorcycle accident involving Okeke on his way back to his hostel. Witnesses saw him in a discussion with local youths and other accident victims before he was escorted to an unknown location.

A fellow student expressed the community’s concern when Okeke failed to return. “He only dodged an oncoming motorcycle, causing the Ikwo guys to get injured. They demanded treatment, and he followed them. Since then, he hasn’t been seen,” the source said.

Tragically, Okeke’s decomposing body was discovered near a river in the community. A close friend confirmed his identity through the clothes he wore the day he disappeared.

University spokesperson Elom Ubochi confirmed the abduction and killing in a statement. “It is with great concern that we inform the university community of the abduction of Magnus Okeke, an extra year student of the Department of Accountancy, on June 1, 2024. The incident occurred outside the university campus while he was on his way back to his private hostel in Ohankwu village,” Ubochi said.

The university’s Directorate of Security Affairs, in collaboration with the police and other security agencies, worked tirelessly to rescue Okeke. Preliminary reports indicate the involvement of Ohankwu village youths, allegedly led by Ogobuchi Uhuo, known as OG Royal.

“Security agencies apprehended some suspects involved in Magnus’ abduction and made every effort to rescue him alive. Unfortunately, on June 17, 2024, Magnus’ decomposing body was found under the bridge of Ako stream at Nwakpu village, along Ikwo/Abakaliki road,” Ubochi stated.

The university has called for anyone with information to assist the authorities in their investigation. “There was no cult-related war on our campus, as some have insinuated. Our campus remains calm and peaceful, and first semester examinations are proceeding without issues,” Ubochi added.

Ebonyi police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu confirmed the recovery of Okeke’s body and the ongoing investigation to apprehend and prosecute those responsible. “His body has been recovered and taken to the mortuary. The command has launched an investigation to arrest his killers,” Ukandu said.

The university management has pledged to support Okeke’s family and work with security agencies to ensure justice is served.
