Nigerian University Shuts Female Hostels Over Alleged Immorality

Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has announced the immediate closure of the Al-Ansar Indabo female students’ hostels located at Hotoro and UDB Road in Kano. The decision, disclosed on Monday by the university’s Vice President, Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba, was based on concerns over student safety and repeated violations of the institution’s code of conduct.

Dr. Garba stated that the university has withdrawn its approval for the hostels following various reports of non-compliance with MAAUN’s guidelines for private student accommodations. The infractions cited include alleged immoral behaviour, poor water and electricity supply, student violence, unauthorised night movement, and the presence of unknown tenants sharing the premises with students.

“These issues pose a serious threat to the well-being of our students,” Garba said, emphasizing the university’s responsibility to provide secure and morally upright housing for its students. He instructed that all affected students vacate the hostels immediately after completing their semester examinations and warned against any continued association with the facilities.

MAAUN said it is working with relevant security agencies to enforce the directive and urged students and parents to consult the Office of the Vice President, Campus Life, for information on approved accommodation. The university also stated it will not take responsibility for any consequences arising from non-compliance with the directive.
