Nigerian University Non-Academic Unions, SSANU, NASU Set for Indefinite Strike

The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have declared an indefinite strike, set to commence on Thursday, July 4. This decision follows the expiration of a two-week strike notice issued due to unpaid salaries and other grievances.

The unions are protesting against the non-payment of four months’ salaries and 13 months’ unpaid wages owed to workers at Abia State University. Additionally, many institutions are yet to receive between three and six months of a promised N35,000 wage award. SSANU criticized the Federal Government for delays in announcing a new national minimum wage.

Further concerns include the lack of educated individuals on the boards of federal tertiary institutions, the proliferation of poorly funded state universities, and unresolved national security issues. The recent killing of a Deputy Vice Chancellor at Uthman Dan Fodio University in Sokoto highlights the urgent need for improved security.

The academic staff union, ASUU, is also considering strike action due to similar frustrations with government neglect.
