Nigerian Police Bust Abuja Trader for Profiteering Scheme: Repackaging Local Rice as Foreign for Financial Gain

The Nigerian police have arrested a 39-year-old trader, Nonso Nwobodo, in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, for the alleged repackaging of local rice into foreign rice bags with the aim of maximizing profits.

The incident unfolded on Saturday around 4:15 pm at Plot 740, Centenary Credentials, Durumi area of the FCT, according to information gathered by SaharaReporters.

Sources within the government have disclosed that Nonso Nwobodo was apprehended while in the process of packing locally produced rice into bags designed to resemble foreign rice packaging. It is suspected that this deceptive tactic was employed to mislead consumers into believing they were purchasing imported rice.

During the arrest, authorities discovered and confiscated 160 bags of rice in various sizes, ranging from 5kg to 50kg, all of which had been re-bagged to give the appearance of foreign origin. Additionally, 53 empty bags that once contained local rice but had been repackaged to resemble foreign brands were recovered from the scene.

Furthermore, law enforcement uncovered 590 new, empty foreign bags of rice at the location, yet to be filled with rice. The police have seized all the rice involved in the illicit operation.
