Nigerian Man St@bbed to D£ath in Dublin: Murder Investigation Underway

A murder investigation has been launched in Dublin following the fatal stabbing of a 34-year-old Nigerian man, Quam Babatunde, in the early hours of Saturday, February 15, 2025. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on South Anne Street in Dublin city centre.

Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan confirmed the victim’s nationality, emphasizing that violence on Dublin’s streets is unacceptable. Speaking on RTÉ’s *This Week* with Justin McCarthy, O’Callaghan refrained from providing further details about Babatunde, citing ongoing efforts to inform his family about the tragedy.

Babatunde, believed to be an asylum seeker, had reportedly attended a concert before the fatal altercation. Gardaí were alerted to the scene on South Anne Street and Duke Lane Upper, where they discovered him with severe injuries. Despite receiving emergency treatment at the scene and being transported to the hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

The attack occurred amid a large-scale public order disturbance involving two groups of individuals who had been socializing at a venue before violence spilled onto the street. Gardaí are analyzing CCTV footage and videos circulating on social media to aid in the investigation.

A second man is currently receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the altercation. Meanwhile, widely shared footage of the incident shows a large crowd gathered, with one individual visibly wielding a knife.

Justice Minister O’Callaghan acknowledged having seen the video and described the footage as shocking. He assured the public that An Garda Síochána is making significant progress in identifying those involved.

“I want to send a clear message that carrying knives and engaging in street violence is completely unacceptable in Ireland,” he stated.

O’Callaghan also highlighted the need for enhanced technological support for law enforcement, including facial recognition technology, to aid in tracking suspects. He urged opposition parties to support legislation that would facilitate this advancement, stating that such tools would significantly expedite police investigations.
