Nigerian Man Arrested in India for Duping Woman in Marriage Scam

A Nigerian national, identified as Johnson, has been arrested by the Rajnandgaon police in India over an alleged marriage scam involving a woman from Chhattisgarh. The suspect reportedly used a fake profile on a matrimonial website to deceive the victim and swindled her out of Rs 15.72 lakh after promising marriage.

According to police reports, Johnson, believed to be around 40 years old, had been living secretly in Delhi despite the expiration of his visa and passport. Posing as a UK-based businessman intending to shift his operations to India, the suspect approached the victim through an associate.

The police revealed that the associate falsely claimed Johnson was detained at Delhi airport and urgently needed money to exchange foreign currency. Trusting this story, the woman provided the requested funds.

Additional Superintendent of Police Rahul Dev Sharma explained that the suspect, in collaboration with his accomplice, cheated and blackmailed the victim. When the victim could no longer reach Johnson and his phone remained switched off, she realised she had been duped and filed a complaint with the Dongargarh Police Cyber Cell.

Following an investigation using cyber tools, the police tracked Johnson to his Delhi residence, conducted a raid, and arrested him. “Accused Johnson is a resident of Nigeria. He has cheated many girls so far. We are trying to gather further information through interrogation,” said Mr Sharma.

Authorities recovered a laptop, four mobile phones, and froze the suspect’s bank account as part of the ongoing investigation.
