Nigerian Government Investigates Four Prominent Northern Politicians Over Russian Flag Incident

Nigeria’s security agencies are currently investigating four prominent northern politicians for their alleged involvement in encouraging protesters to wave Russian flags during recent #EndBadGovernance demonstrations.

Sources revealed that these political figures from Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano states played key roles in last year’s elections and are now suspected of inciting the use of Russian flags to push for an unconstitutional regime change. One source, preferring to remain anonymous, indicated that these politicians have connections with both West African and European entities aimed at destabilizing the current government.

The protests, primarily driven by hardships and hunger, escalated on Monday when demonstrators in Northern states began waving Russian flags and calling for President Bola Tinubu to step down. Chanting slogans in Hausa, protesters expressed their preference for military intervention, a sentiment seemingly inspired by recent political upheavals in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, where Russia has been accused of backing unconstitutional regime changes.

The Nigerian military has labeled the act of flying the Russian flag as treasonous and vowed to prosecute those involved. General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, emphasized the gravity of the situation following a National Security Council meeting. The Department of State Services (DSS) has already made arrests, including tailors producing the flags and their financial backers.

On Tuesday, security personnel intensified their crackdown, significantly reducing the number of protesters waving the Russian flag. In Kano, the police have arrested several foreigners suspected of orchestrating the protests and have relaxed curfews to restore normalcy. The Gombe State Police Command also paraded ten suspects for similar offenses, stressing the disrespect shown to national symbols.

President Tinubu held a confidential meeting with intelligence chiefs to address the ongoing unrest. While the specifics of the discussions remain undisclosed, it is believed they focused on curbing the protests.

Various Nigerian security agencies, including the DSS, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and the Police, have been actively monitoring and apprehending those funding and supporting the protests. The DSS has uncovered evidence of unconventional financing methods, such as cryptocurrency, being used to support the demonstrations.

Despite these measures, several groups and leaders have condemned the use of Russian flags and the associated demands. The #EndBadGovernance movement clarified that their agenda does not include the waving of foreign flags. Socio-political organizations like Afenifere and PANDEF have also criticized the protesters’ actions and called for stringent measures against those promoting such activities.

In contrast, some groups from the northern states have distanced themselves from the protests, emphasizing that the region does not support the overthrow of a democratically elected government.

Meanwhile, the nationwide protests have led to targeted actions against political figures, including the former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, whose residence was the site of a peaceful demonstration.
