Nigerian Cocaine Kingpin Arrested in Thailand
A major drug bust on Koh Phangan has led to the arrest of a Nigerian national suspected of being a key player in the island’s cocaine trade. The operation, carried out on Saturday night, March 1, 2025, near the Pantip Plaza market, highlights Thailand’s ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking in tourist hotspots.
Tourist police launched the investigation after receiving intelligence about a Black foreign national selling narcotics to tourists. Their inquiries led them to 37-year-old Ugonna J. (surname withheld), whom authorities discreetly monitored before orchestrating a covert sting operation.
Undercover officers used WhatsApp to contact Ugonna, posing as potential buyers. A meeting was arranged near Pantip Plaza, a strategic location for the bust. Surveillance teams positioned themselves in the area, waiting for the suspect to arrive. As soon as Ugonna handed over the illicit substance to an undercover officer, police confirmed it was cocaine and swiftly moved in to arrest him.
The operation resulted in the seizure of 25.71 grams of cocaine, valued at approximately 240,000 baht (USD 7,000). Authorities also confiscated a black Mazda 2 vehicle and two mobile phones, believed to contain crucial evidence about the suspect’s drug network.
Ugonna now faces serious charges, including possession of a Category 2 narcotic with intent to sell and illegal distribution of narcotics without permission. He remains in custody at Koh Phangan Police Station as investigators work to build their case.
Further questioning revealed that Ugonna is suspected of being a major cocaine supplier not only on Koh Phangan but also in other popular tourist destinations such as Phuket and Krabi. He allegedly sold one-gram packages of cocaine for 6,000 baht (USD 175) each, charging extra for deliveries outside the island. To avoid detection, he reportedly refrained from using postal services, instead relying on couriers for transport.
Police officials describe the arrest as a significant victory in their fight against drug trafficking in Thailand’s tourism sector. The case also underscores the effectiveness of modern enforcement tactics, including undercover operations and the use of digital communication tools like WhatsApp.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to dismantle the network and bring all those involved to justice.
