Nigerian Catholic Priest Dies After Collapsing During Walk in US
A Nigerian Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Michael Oli, has died in the United States after collapsing while taking a walk on Thursday, 26 March 2026.
The Catholic Diocese of Awka confirmed his death in a statement issued on Friday, 27 March 2026. According to the diocese, he had been serving as Administrator of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Faith, South Dakota, at the time of his death.
The statement, signed by Chancellor Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi, noted that Fr. Oli was ordained on 23 August 2008. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced later.
In a separate statement, the Diocese of Rapid City, through Bishop Scott Bullock, said the priest died suddenly on the morning of 26 March while serving at St. Joseph Parish in Faith, as well as associated missions in Mud Butte and Red Owl.
Bishop Bullock said he had been in contact with the Deputy Sheriff of Meade County, who ordered an autopsy to establish the cause of death. He added that the circumstances remain unclear, though the priest was reportedly not feeling well prior to the incident.
The diocese has asked priests within its jurisdiction to celebrate three Masses for the repose of his soul. Arrangements for burial and memorial services are still pending.
