Nigerian Billionaires Dangote, Rabiu Clash in High-Stakes Business Battle
In a headline-making showdown, two of Nigeria’s wealthiest businessmen, Aliko Dangote and Abdul Samad Rabiu, find themselves embroiled in a fierce rivalry over control of key industries. Dangote, Africa’s richest individual, presides over the vast Dangote Industries Limited, while Rabiu leads the formidable BUA Group. This ongoing battle has roots dating back over three decades and centers on dominance in the sugar and cement sectors. What’s more, a new struggle is emerging over control of the oil sector as Rabiu makes significant strides in establishing his own refinery, while Dangote has already completed his.
Dangote, a titan in the West African industrial landscape, boasts a staggering net worth of $16.1 billion as estimated by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index in November 2023. This places him as not only the richest person in Africa but also the world’s richest black individual and the 107th richest person globally.
Rabiu, on the other hand, stands as Dangote’s formidable competitor in the sugar and cement industries. His wealth, as of January 2023, makes him the fourth richest individual on the African continent, with an estimated net worth of $6.7 billion. BUA Cement, part of Rabiu’s empire, holds a significant market share in Nigeria, securing its place as the second-largest cement producer, with Dangote Cement leading the market with a share of over 60%.
The feud between these two corporate giants has a long history, dating back to 2008 when BUA Cement entered the market and quickly emerged as a formidable competitor to Dangote Cement. Tensions escalated in 2020 when BUA Cement accused Dangote Cement of obstructing its access to a limestone quarry in Edo State, a claim that remains the subject of an ongoing legal battle.
The latest chapter in this rivalry unfolded with Dangote taking to the pages of national newspapers to accuse Rabiu of sponsoring false reports against his businesses. Dangote Industries Limited vehemently denied allegations of engaging in illegal foreign exchange deals and warned against what it perceived as economic sabotage, even mentioning Rabiu by name in its statement. This move by Dangote was prompted by reports suggesting that the company was being probed over alleged illegal foreign exchange laundering running into billions of dollars, purportedly carried out during the tenure of the Central Bank of Nigeria under Mr. Godwin Emefiele.
BUA Group swiftly responded, accusing Dangote and his company of longstanding efforts to undermine its cement and sugar enterprises. BUA recounted historical confrontations, such as a dispute over sugar trading and a contentious land lease agreement for a sugar refinery. Despite these challenges, BUA persevered, even securing a spot among the six companies granted licenses to expand Nigeria’s cement industry, overcoming numerous obstacles along the way.
The clash between these two influential figures transcends business, often involving political figures, such as when then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje mediated their public dispute over sugar in April 2021. With the recent escalation of tensions, it remains to be seen if another political intervention will quell this feud. The battle between Dangote and Rabiu continues to captivate the nation and the business world, with significant implications for the future of key industries in Nigeria.
