Nigerian Army University Professor Dies in Boko Haram Captivity Nearly One Year After Abduction
Abubakar Mohammed El-Jummah, a professor at the Nigerian Army University, Biu, has died while in Boko Haram captivity, nearly a year after he was abducted.
El-Jummah was kidnapped on March 2, 2025, along the Damaturu–Biu road in Borno State.
His family confirmed his death in a statement released on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. According to the statement, he died at about 2:45 a.m. after a brief illness believed to be linked to the conditions he endured while in captivity.
He has been buried in line with Islamic rites.
A Salat al-Ghaib (funeral prayer in absentia) is scheduled for Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the Ngomari Old Airport Juma’at Mosque behind his residence in Maiduguri by 2:00 p.m.
El-Jummah was known for his work as a scholar and mentor, and for his contributions to education and community development. His death has been described by family members as a loss to his immediate family, the academic community, and the wider society.
