Nigerian Anti-Narcotics Agency Identifies Anambra as High-Risk for Drug Abuse

Daniel Onyishi, the Anambra state commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), pinpointed Anambra as one of the states grappling with elevated drug abuse rates in Nigeria. During a visit to Nonye Soludo, the wife of the Anambra State governor, in Awka, he expressed his concerns regarding the escalating instances of drug abuse, emphasizing the urgency for collective action.

NDLEA revealed that Nigeria faces a 14.4 percent drug abuse prevalence rate, surpassing the global average of 5.5 percent. Onyishi disclosed that the agency intercepted a substantial 3.38 tons of drugs in Anambra in 2018 alone.

Onyishi stated, “This visit is to formally welcome Mrs. Soludo as the chairperson of Anambra state drug control committee. The committee aims to spearhead an action-driven crusade for the complete eradication of drug use in Anambra state.”

Responding to the alarming statistics, Mrs. Soludo conveyed her preparedness to collaborate with the NDLEA, vowing to lead the ongoing battle against drug abuse in the state. She stressed the need for a united front against the societal menace and emphasized the importance of identifying and prosecuting those involved in the production of illicit substances.

While acknowledging the efforts of her initiative, “Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo,” in combatting drug abuse, she highlighted the necessity for a comprehensive and united response to address the challenges faced by society, particularly among the youth.

“I promise to work closely with the agency, advocate for stronger community involvement, and stress the importance of pursuing each case until justice is served,” Mrs. Soludo affirmed.
