Nigerian-American Yomi Faparusi Set to Contest for US Congress
Yomi Faparusi, a Nigerian-American based in Tennessee, has declared his candidacy as an independent to represent Tennessee’s 5th District in the US Congress. Faparusi made this announcement during a virtual press conference over the weekend, expressing his commitment to unifying a divided America and addressing pressing issues such as inflation and immigration.
Faparusi, a researcher by profession, highlighted the challenges facing the country, including hyperinflation and the eroding middle class. He emphasized his goal to restore the American Dream and create a conducive environment for small businesses, which he described as the backbone of job creation.
“America is so divided and weakened because politicians now run on divisive and wedge issues,” Faparusi stated. “I decided to run as a unifier so that things can get done. I also hope my victory in November will inspire the next generation.”
Addressing the gridlock in Congress, Faparusi promised to work across party lines for the common good, noting the public’s frustration with government shutdowns and ineffective governance. He also stressed the need for a secure border and a comprehensive immigration plan, recognizing immigration as both a social and economic issue.
“I am running as an Independent because I do not want to be beholden to any party,” Faparusi explained. “The TN 5th district is ideologically diverse, and it needs to be represented by someone who understands and appreciates this diversity. I will represent all the people, not just a partisan segment.”
Faparusi’s campaign theme, “I care,” underscores his dedication to addressing the concerns of his constituents. As a business owner and an immigration attorney, he believes his diverse experiences equip him to advocate effectively for his district.
Born in Ibadan, Nigeria, Faparusi is a graduate of the College of Medicine at the University of Ibadan. He is also a licensed physician and attorney, focusing on immigration law in his Tennessee practice. His background in student politics and community service in Nigeria has shaped his approach to leadership and public service.
Faparusi concluded his announcement with a call to action: “I care about your concerns, and I want to go to Washington to serve you. I hope that you will give me a chance to represent you, and I will always be answerable to you, my constituents. At the end, everything will be okay.”
