“Nigeria Was on Life Support When Tinubu Took Over” – Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has described the economic state of Nigeria as being on “life support” when President Bola Tinubu assumed office. Speaking during the 2024 Constituency Briefing and Empowerment Programme at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium, Akpabio highlighted the severity of the challenges inherited from the previous administration under Muhammadu Buhari.

Recounting a conversation with Tinubu, he said, “I once asked him, ‘Are you excited about being president after seeing the economy left behind by Emefiele?’ He replied, ‘Small president, I must tell you, I didn’t know it was this bad.’”

Despite these challenges, Akpabio expressed optimism about the reforms underway, noting they are crucial for sustainable development. He urged Nigerians to be patient, emphasizing, “You did it in Lagos, and you will do it again for Nigeria. It’s just a matter of time. We are praying for you, and God will grant you the wisdom to lead us to El Dorado.”

The Senate President also encouraged beneficiaries of the empowerment scheme to use the provided tools to improve their lives rather than selling them. He assured attendees that food items and resources would be distributed equitably across districts.

Akpabio commended Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno for fostering peace and inclusivity, stressing the importance of unity for progress. “Without peace, there cannot be development. The governor has embraced all Akwa Ibom people, regardless of political affiliations,” he added.
