Nigeria Restores Electricity Supply to Niger as ECOWAS Lifts Sanctions

Nigeria has officially agreed to resume electricity supply to Niger Republic following the lifting of sanctions by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The decision, which also pertains to Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea, was announced after an extraordinary summit held at the State House Conference Hall, Abuja.

The sanctions, in place since August of the previous year, were imposed in response to a coup in Niger. The restoration of electricity is expected to bring relief to the Nigerien population, which had been grappling with the adverse effects of power shortages.

President Bola Tinubu, who chairs ECOWAS, called for the suspension of economic sanctions on the affected countries, emphasizing that these measures aimed to encourage diplomatic dialogue. Tinubu stressed that the actions were driven by regional ideals, including security, social stability, democratic governance, and sustainable economic development.

In a communique read by Dr Omar Touray, the president of the ECOWAS Commission, it was outlined that the decision to lift sanctions was motivated by humanitarian considerations, especially in light of the upcoming month of Ramadan. The statement also highlighted the ECOWAS Authority’s call for dialogue, urging the reconsideration of withdrawal plans by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

The Authority expressed gratitude to General Yakubu Gowon for his involvement and emphasized the need to expedite the operationalization of the standby force to combat terrorism in the region.

In related matters, the ECOWAS also called for the immediate release of ousted Niger Republic President Mohammed Bazoom and encouraged Senegal to preserve democratic gains through free and transparent elections.
