Nigeria Police Warns NLC and TUC: Strike Could Trigger Political Instability
In a stern warning issued on Monday, the Nigeria Police Force cautioned the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) against proceeding with their planned nationwide strike. Speaking on behalf of the Force, Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi highlighted the potential ramifications of the strike, emphasizing the risk of heightened tension and political instability across the country.
The organized labour’s strike action aims to push for a significant increase in the minimum wage for workers. While the NLC and TUC advocate for a new minimum wage of N494,000, the Nigerian government maintains its stance on a significantly lower figure of N60,000.
Adejobi urged the NLC and TUC to re-engage in negotiations with the Federal Government through the Tripartite Committee, stressing the importance of dialogue in resolving the ongoing dispute. He underscored that the strike, deemed illegal and premature by the government, could exacerbate existing challenges and impose undue hardships on the populace.
Assuring the public of the Police Force’s readiness to maintain law and order, Adejobi emphasized the deployment of sufficient resources nationwide to ensure citizens can carry out their lawful activities without disruption. In closing, he appealed to both the organized labour and the public to prioritize dialogue and legal channels for conflict resolution, urging responsible conduct in accordance with the law.
