Nigeria Needs a Total Overhaul,” Says Vice President Shettima Amid Hunger Protests
In response to recent nationwide hunger protests, Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s systems and leadership. Addressing the underlying causes of the unrest, Shettima stated that Nigeria has long ignored critical issues, resulting in widespread destruction of lives and properties.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony for disadvantaged students of Hau’wa Memorial School (HMS), operated by the AMA Foundation, Shettima, represented by his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmad, lamented the state of the nation. “For too long we have tolerated poverty, corruption, and poor leadership. The result is a generation that lacks respect for God, the law, leadership, and our values,” he said.
Shettima assured attendees that the federal government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is committed to restoring Nigeria’s prosperity, ensuring future generations benefit as past ones did under the leadership of historical figures like the Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello.
He also urged parents to take a more active role in their children’s lives, stressing that “no matter the circumstances, there is no justification for stealing or looting someone else’s property.”
“We must work hard to rebuild this country and believe in its potential. If our current politics are not conducive, we must change them. If the system is failing to produce good leadership, peace, and security, we must overhaul it,” he added.
Prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, also weighed in, describing the protests as a wake-up call for leaders to address societal issues and curb lawlessness.

My vice president spoke tongue in cheek about the urgent imperatives of overhauling Nigeria, he has consistently vehemently resisted every altruistic efforts at a genuine overhaul of Nigeria. To him, Nigeria as presently configured, constituted and governed is perfect and requires no tinkering nor recalibration. If Mr vice president is serious about an overhaul of Nigeria let him and his boss dust up all previous attempts at restructuring of the country and convene a constituent assembly where each constituent ethnic nationalities across the country would send an equal number of delegates (chosen by the constituent ethnic nationalities) to fashion out… Read more »
