Nigeria Faces Backlash Over N3 Billion Expenditure on COP28 Delegation Amid Economic Challenges
The Nigerian government is under scrutiny as it allocates at least N2.7 billion to fund its delegation of 1,411 individuals attending the United Nations’ COP28 climate summit in Dubai. This move has sparked outrage among citizens grappling with a 27.33% inflation rate and the impending need for a $9 billion loan to support the N27.5 trillion 2024 budget.
Contrary to initial reports, Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, clarified that the delegation comprises 422 individuals. However, critics argue that the cost remains exorbitant, with an estimated N2.7 billion expenditure.
The breakdown reveals the government’s spending on flight tickets, with an average cost of N2 million for a round trip. President Tinubu and some officials opted for the presidential jet, while others took commercial flights, potentially including business-class tickets.
In addition to flight expenses, each traveler receives estacode based on their position. Ministers, senators, representatives, special advisers, and various government officials are entitled to varying amounts, contributing to an estimated N248 million on ministerial allowances and N381 million for the National Assembly participants.
Moreover, the government defends the large delegation, emphasizing Nigeria’s stake in climate action due to being the continent’s largest economy and most populous country. However, critics question the competency of the delegation, with concerns raised about their understanding of COP negotiation procedures.
While Nigeria’s delegation of 1,411 attendees ranks third globally, the extravagant spending contrasts with citizens’ economic hardships. The country’s delegation size surpasses even larger economies like China and raises questions about the allocation of resources during a challenging economic period.
In comparison, Morocco, Kenya, Tanzania, and Ghana sent significantly smaller delegations to COP28, highlighting Nigeria’s unique position with a delegation size that exceeds 1,000 participants.
As the government faces criticism for its COP28 expenditure, citizens continue to grapple with economic challenges, further intensifying debates over fiscal responsibility and prioritizing the nation’s needs.
