Nigeria Customs Intercepts 940 Bullets, Contraband in Ogun State
In a special anti-smuggling operation along the border line, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) intercepted 940 rounds of live ammunition on Thursday. The Comptroller of the command, Ahmadu Shuaibu, disclosed this during a press conference on Friday, where seized contrabands valued at N557,120,828 were displayed.
Shuaibu revealed that the officers had been tracking the ammunition for over two weeks, originating from the neighboring Republic of Benin, before it was smuggled into Nigeria. The smugglers attempted to conceal the bullets inside sacks of cassava flakes (garri) in an attempt to deceive border security.
During the operation, the suspects abandoned the contraband and fled through the bush path to evade arrest. Shuaibu emphasized the need for collaboration from Nigerians to combat smuggling activities involving harmful substances, light weapons, arms, and ammunition.
In addition to the ammunition, the Customs also seized 123 sacks and 3,172 parcels of cannabis sativa (Indian Hemp), 380 pieces of donkey skin, 304 bales of used clothes, and 910 cartons of frozen poultry products. These items were intercepted at various strategic locations including creeks and border lines across the State.
The successful operation underscores the ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Customs Service to curb illegal activities and protect the nation’s borders from illicit trade and security threats.
