Newlywed Wife Kills Husband with Rat Poison

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newlywed woman over the alleged poisoning of her husband, who died after eating a meal prepared at their home.

The incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 pm in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

In a statement issued in Dutse on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the deceased ate lunch at home and shortly afterward became seriously ill. He was taken to a hospital for treatment but was confirmed dead while receiving medical attention.

SP Adam said detectives from the Jahun Police Division commenced an investigation and arrested the wife as the main suspect.

According to the police, the suspect confessed during interrogation that she poisoned her husband’s food with rat poison. She reportedly told investigators that she sent her cousin to purchase the substance used.

The police spokesperson added that the suspect claimed she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she said influenced her actions.

Following the development, the Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for further investigation.

SP Adam said the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.

The police command urged the public to remain calm and to seek lawful means of resolving marital and family disputes, warning against taking the law into one’s hands.

The command also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice and protecting lives and property across the state.
