New Zealand Parliament Member Resigns After Being Caught Shoplifting in Boutique

Golriz Ghahraman, a prominent member of the New Zealand Parliament, has tendered her resignation following the emergence of video evidence capturing her shoplifting from upscale boutiques.

Last week, local media outlets exposed allegations of three distinct thefts from boutiques in Auckland and Wellington, totaling thousands of dollars, including the theft of a designer handbag.

In a statement released by the Green Party, to which Ghahraman belonged, on Tuesday, the MP attributed her actions to work-related stress, stating that it led her to behave “in ways completely out of character.”

“People should, rightly, expect the highest standards of behavior from their elected representatives. I fell short. I’m sorry,” Ghahraman expressed remorse.

Citing the imperative for her mental well-being, Ghahraman decided to step down as a member of parliament, emphasizing her intention to focus on recovery and explore alternative avenues for contributing to positive change in the world.

Golriz Ghahraman, an Oxford-educated human rights lawyer born in Iran, made history in 2017 as New Zealand’s first refugee MP. In recent months, she gained prominence as a leading advocate for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. Her resignation marks a surprising and untimely end to her political career.
