Sacred Space Violation: Catholic Altar Reconsecrated Following Couple’s Indecent Act
The Catholic Church in Schechen, situated in the Rosenheim district of Upper Bavaria, recently underwent a solemn reconsecration ceremony after an unsettling incident involving a couple engaging in sexual activity on the church’s altar.
The altar, a sacred space for Catholic rituals, was subjected to the desecration by the couple, who not only committed the act but also documented it, thrusting the church into the spotlight in 2023. The incident led to legal consequences, with the woman involved accepting a penalty order related to the case.
A spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising revealed that the re-consecration, involving the clearance of the altar for the Catholic rite and a subsequent blessing with incense and holy water during a liturgy of the word, took place before Christmas.
The Rosenheim district court disclosed that the woman’s trial, initially scheduled for early February, has been rendered unnecessary due to her acceptance of the penalty order. The specific details of the penalty were not disclosed, in accordance with the confidentiality typically maintained in summary penalty order proceedings.
However, the legal saga continues for the woman’s partner, a Rosenheim-born man facing charges of serious offenses, including insulting mischief in a place dedicated to religious worship. His trial is ongoing at the Traunstein District Court and is set to resume at the end of January. The accused has been charged with various offenses, including assault, deprivation of liberty, threatening behavior, and fraud.
Such incidents are rare, and a survey conducted by dpa among Catholic dioceses in Bavaria at the end of 2023 revealed that the need to re-consecrate an altar due to desecration is infrequent. The diocese of Augsburg reported four such instances in recent years, with cases in Vöhringen and Bellenberg in 2017, involving extensive graffiti, including anti-Christian slogans. Another case in Gersthofen in 2018 involved the theft and scattering of consecrated wafers. However, no other dioceses reported similar known cases.
The reconsecration of the altar in Schechen serves as a poignant reminder of the sacredness attached to religious spaces and the solemnity with which the Catholic Church addresses acts that violate their sanctity.
