Never Knew I Would Live to Be 90 — Soyinka Reflects at Cultural Exchange Event

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, expressed surprise at reaching his 90th birthday during a lively interaction with 383 students at the 2024 Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange Programme. Held at his ARI residence in Ijegba, Abeokuta, the event celebrated Soyinka’s milestone birthday with reflections on his life and achievements.

The renowned playwright and activist, born on July 13, 1934, shared candidly about his longevity, admitting, “I never knew I would live to be 90.” Soyinka recounted that his journey as a writer was driven by a desire to correct misconceptions he encountered in his youth.

The event, graced by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, also highlighted educational achievements, with scholarships and laptops awarded to top performers in an essay contest marking Soyinka’s birthday. Governor Abiodun praised the laureate’s contributions, noting his impact on Nigerian culture and global literature.

Reflecting on contemporary issues, Soyinka criticized societal shortcomings and called for introspection among Nigerians. He emphasized personal responsibility over attributing crimes to poverty, urging a focus on ethical living.

Governor Abiodun underscored the importance of engaging youth in national development, aligning with Soyinka’s principles of justice and excellence in arts and humanities. The programme, which included poetry, drama, and advocacy, aimed to inspire future leaders and foster international cultural exchange.

The 2024 Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange Programme attracted students nationwide, highlighting themes of governance and nation-building. Among the participants, Alabi Oluwanifemi emerged as the top essayist, embodying Soyinka’s vision for a progressive and unified society.

The event concluded with tributes to Soyinka’s enduring legacy and commitment to education and cultural exchange, reinforcing his influence as a global ambassador of African heritage.
