NDLEA Arrests Canadian at Lagos Airport, Seizes ₦9bn Worth of Opioids
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, for attempting to smuggle synthetic cannabis into Nigeria. The arrest took place on Thursday, October 3, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.
According to NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, Munju was apprehended while undergoing passenger clearance for a KLM flight from Canada. A search of her luggage revealed 74 parcels of ‘Canadian Loud,’ a potent strain of synthetic cannabis, weighing 35.20 kilograms. The illicit drugs were concealed in two of her three bags.
During questioning, Munju confessed that she had been recruited online to traffic the drugs in exchange for 10,000 Canadian dollars. She admitted to accepting the offer to fund her ongoing master’s degree program in Canada.
In a separate operation, NDLEA agents at the Port Harcourt Ports in Onne, Rivers State, intercepted a shipment containing 13,298,000 pills of various opioids, including Tramadol, Tapentadol, and Carisoprodol, along with 338,253 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. The drugs, valued at over ₦9 billion, arrived from India and were uncovered during a joint inspection with Nigerian Customs officials and other port authorities on October 2 and 3.
