NBA Writes President Tinubu, Says Nigeria Facing Unprecedented Seige

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has raised serious concerns about the escalating insecurity in Nigeria. The NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau, accompanied by other national officers, expressed dismay over the prevailing situation during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

In a letter titled ‘State of the Nation,’ dated 14th February, addressed to President Bola Tinubu, the NBA highlighted three critical issues – insecurity, administration of justice, and the economy.

Maikyau, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), emphasized that the “challenges of insecurity” have reached “alarming proportions.” He outlined the devastating impact of banditry, terrorism, and rampant kidnapping for ransom, which collectively pose a significant threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The NBA President specifically mentioned the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Ekiti State, as well as the ongoing onslaught and massacres in various states, including Plateau, Benue, Kwara, Anambra, Imo, Enugu, and beyond.

The association expressed dissatisfaction with the perceived inability of law enforcement agencies to curb the rising tide of insecurity, asserting that Nigeria is currently “under siege by terrorists, bandits, and criminal gangs.”

During the press conference, Maikyau conveyed the NBA’s concern that many Nigerians are losing confidence in the government’s capacity to address the security challenges effectively. The letter to President Tinubu, read by Maikyau, urged for a transparent government-people engagement to keep the public informed about ongoing efforts to secure the nation.
