Nationwide Strike: ASUU Issues Final 14-Day Ultimatum to FG
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a new 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding urgent resolution of outstanding issues affecting its members. ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke announced the decision in a statement released on Wednesday, expressing frustration over the government’s perceived lack of commitment and use of delay tactics.
The ultimatum, effective from Monday, September 23, 2024, comes after an earlier 21-day notice that was also disregarded by the government. Osodeke emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, “In view of the foregoing, ASUU resolves to give the Nigerian Government another 14 days during which all the lingering issues must have been concretely addressed to the satisfaction of the membership of the union.”
He warned that the union should not be held accountable for any potential industrial disharmony resulting from the government’s failure to act on this latest opportunity to avert a looming crisis. The statement underscores the growing tensions between ASUU and the government, raising concerns about the future of academic stability in Nigerian universities.
