Nationwide Blackout Imminent as National Grid Suffers Yet Another Collapse
Nigeria faces the specter of a nationwide blackout following a fresh collapse of the national electricity grid, managed centrally from Osogbo, Osun State. The collapse occurred at approximately 4:30 pm on Thursday, plunging millions of households and businesses into darkness.
This latest incident marks the fourth grid collapse within the first three months of the year, exacerbating longstanding challenges within Nigeria’s power sector.
Reports from distribution companies (DisCos) across the nation’s 36 states confirm that their feeders were rendered inactive, leading to widespread blackouts.
The grid’s output, which was recorded at 2,984 megawatts as of 4 pm on Thursday, swiftly plummeted to zero within an hour. By 5 pm, all 21 plants connected to the grid had ceased operations.
