House of Representatives Threatens to Takeover Edo Assembly
The House of Representatives has threatened to “invoke Section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution and take over the Edo State House of Assembly” if the state’s governor, Godwin Obaseki fails to heed to the recommendations of the ad hoc committee it set up to investigate the crisis in the Assembly.
The House on Wednesday unanimously adopted the report of the Abdulrazak Namdas-led committee which declared “null and void” actions of the seventh Assembly of the state pending “proper inauguration” of the House.
The House urged Obaseki to issue fresh proclamation for the inauguration of the State Assembly within one week, in line with the provisions of section 105(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, and the Director General of the Department of State Services, Mustapha Bichi, to shut down the State Assembly to avoid alleged intimidation of some members-elect.
