Naira Sees Significant Surge on Binance Amid Cryptocurrency Access Concerns in Nigeria

The Naira experienced a substantial appreciation on Binance, a leading cryptocurrency platform, as concerns over access restrictions to digital assets surfaced in Nigeria.

Although there is no official confirmation of Nigeria imposing restrictions on Binance and other cryptocurrency platforms, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information & Strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urged the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Economic and Financial Crime Commission to take action against cryptocurrencies.

On Wednesday, numerous Nigerian users reported difficulties accessing Binance, expressing their concerns on the platform. Consequently, the Naira witnessed a remarkable surge against the US Dollar on Binance’s P2P market.

The data gathered by Daily Post indicates that the Naira appreciated from N1,936 to N1,608 per US dollar on Wednesday, marking a significant gain of N333 or 17.2%.

In response to the situation, Binance issued a statement expressing its commitment to collaborating with the Nigerian Government to combat market manipulation. To demonstrate this commitment, the platform took several measures, including disabling the sell option for Nigerian users, capping the buy option at $1802, and temporarily halting the purchase of cryptocurrencies via P2P.

Binance explained, “To protect users and prevent any abuse, our system automatically pauses in the event of significant currency movement. We have stringent measures in place to protect users in the market, including real-time monitoring and immediate removal of non-compliant advertisements.”

Meanwhile, the Naira’s value appreciated for the second time this week, reaching N1542.58 per US dollar on Wednesday, according to FMDQ data, signaling a dynamic and volatile period for the Nigerian cryptocurrency market.
