NAFDAC Warns of Circulating Fake Anti-Malaria, Antibiotics in Nigeria
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised alarm over the circulation of substandard and falsified medicines in Nigeria, including anti-malarias, antibiotics, and drugs for managing hypertension and diabetes.
During a community sensitization workshop held in Kaduna, the Director of NAFDAC’s North West Zone, Bala Mshelia, emphasized the growing public health risks posed by counterfeit drugs. He stated that these falsified products target widely-used treatments for major public health issues.
Mshelia called for a collective effort to address this threat, stating, “The fight against substandard and falsified medicines requires collaboration between government agencies, healthcare professionals, law enforcement, and the public. Together, we can ensure that every medicine is safe and effective.”
The Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Kaduna Chapter, Sunday Ukoh, praised NAFDAC for organizing the workshop, stressing that all stakeholders must work together to combat the issue. The Vice Chairman of the Association of Community Pharmacists, Abosede Garba, echoed similar concerns, warning that counterfeit medicines not only endanger patients but also damage the credibility of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Garba highlighted the critical role of community pharmacists in the fight against fake medicines, noting that their proximity to the public makes them the first line of defense. She commended NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts to protect public health, stating, “Your commitment to regulating, educating, and raising awareness is invaluable in safeguarding the well-being of our citizens.”
