“N80.2bn Scandal: We’ve Given Yahaya Bello Last Chance to Defend Himself” – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a final ultimatum to former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, demanding his defense against allegations of laundering N80.2 billion.

A reliable source disclosed to Vanguard on Monday that the anti-graft agency has instructed Bello to appear in court on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, to face a 19-count charge of money laundering.

The EFCC’s investigation reportedly uncovered intelligence suggesting that Bello’s recent attempt to surrender might have been a calculated move to interfere with the commission’s procedures. According to the source, Bello had communicated with certain officers upon arriving at the EFCC premises, but these interactions raised suspicions that his surrender was a ploy to evade justice.

The source stated, “The EFCC operates with strict professionalism when dealing with arrests, bails, and surrenders. Bello’s attempt to present himself as an influential figure in a situation where he is a suspect was inappropriate. Intelligence gathered indicated that his motives could have disrupted his trial.”

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, acted swiftly to reject the former governor’s surrender attempt, deeming it insincere. The commission has emphasized that Wednesday’s court appearance is Bello’s final opportunity to defend himself.

“The EFCC is not fazed by his delay tactics. Charges have been filed, and any further attempts to evade trial will only worsen his case. His last chance is to present himself in court to enter a plea,” the source concluded.
