“My Job is Done” – PDP Reconciliation Committee Chairman, Oyinlola Declares
Amid escalating tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the chairman of the party’s National Reconciliation Committee, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, announced the successful resolution of internal disputes plaguing the National Working Committee (NWC). Oyinlola made the declaration following a meeting with NWC members in Abuja on Tuesday.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Oyinlola said, “To the glory of God, we have been able to resolve the differences that have been causing our party some headache within the National Working Committee. We now have a united NWC, which is crucial for the progress of the Peoples Democratic Party.”
Although Oyinlola declined to detail the specific issues discussed, he expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that his role as chairman of the reconciliation committee was now complete. He emphasized that the reconciliation focused solely on internal NWC disputes and did not touch on the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for Thursday.
Attendees at the reconciliation meeting included key PDP figures such as Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Treasurer Yayari Ahmed, and Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeeq Arapaja, among others.
The PDP has been embroiled in internal conflicts after Damagum and Anyanwu suspended the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade. In retaliation, Ologunagba and Ajibade suspended Damagum and Anyanwu, leading to a leadership stalemate. This impasse was broken by the intervention of the PDP Governors Forum, led by Governor Bala Mohammed, who called for a ceasefire and a return to the status quo.
Despite the reconciliation efforts, uncertainty continues to loom. A faction reportedly aligned with Governor Mohammed has filed a lawsuit in the Federal High Court in Zamfara, seeking to compel the party to proceed with its NEC meeting as scheduled on Thursday, October 24. The suit names the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as respondents, asking the court to prevent the Damagum-led NWC from postponing the crucial meeting.
