“My Husband’s Apologies Are Yielding Results” – Uchechi Kanu
Mrs. Uchechi Kanu, wife of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has said the recent courtroom apologies made by her husband’s lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), are already yielding positive results.
In a statement shared with Newsmen Uchechi Kanu described Agabi as “a towering figure” and commended his approach during Friday’s session at the Federal High Court in Abuja. She explained that the apology was a strategic and necessary move to address tensions and clarify past confrontations witnessed during proceedings before Justice Binta Nyako.
During the court session, Agabi tendered an apology on behalf of Kanu, stating that it was time to extend regrets to Justice Nyako, the prosecution, and Kanu’s own legal team. He acknowledged Kanu’s long-standing frustration and admitted that his previous attacks on the court were not justified. Agabi also expressed remorse over Kanu’s comments directed at the Federal Government’s lawyer, who he described as a highly respected member of the legal community and chairman of the Body of Benchers.
Reacting to the development, Uchechi Kanu said her husband recognised the importance of allowing his new counsel to address the court concerning his prior outbursts, which she said had “shaken the foundations of the Nigerian judiciary.” She added that Agabi’s intervention was intended to restore decorum within the court system and rebuild trust within the bar and bench, particularly following Justice Nyako’s recusal.
She further revealed that Justice James Omotosho, who is now presiding over the matter, also extended an apology to her husband for the prolonged delays and alleged mishandling of the trial over the years, acknowledging the hardship Kanu has endured under the Federal High Court in Abuja.
