MTN Suffers Massive Subscriber Exodus in 2022, According to NCC Report
Telecommunications giant MTN has recorded the highest number of subscribers porting out of its network since its inception up to December 2022, according to a report by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The NCC’s newly published 2022 Subscriber/Network Data Annual Report, which analyzes the subscriber and service data trends from May 2013 to December 2022, provides an in-depth look at the porting activities across Nigeria’s major telecom operators.
According to the report, MTN experienced a significant exodus, with 444,226 subscribers porting to other network providers. This number is considerably higher than that of its competitors. Airtel, Glo, and EMTS recorded 351,422; 277,527; and 190,724 port-outs, respectively.
On the other hand, EMTS saw a significant influx of subscribers porting into its network. The report shows that 676,944 subscribers switched to EMTS, making it the leading network in terms of port-ins. Airtel followed with 331,837 port-ins, while MTN and Glo recorded 181,301 and 105,746 port-ins, respectively.
The report sheds light on the porting trends in Nigeria, revealing that MTN experienced the highest number of subscribers leaving the network, while EMTS saw the most significant increase in subscribers from other networks. This data suggests a shift in consumer preferences and raises questions about MTN’s ability to retain customers amidst growing competition in the Nigerian telecommunications market.
As the telecom industry evolves, it remains to be seen how MTN will respond to these trends and what measures it will take to regain lost ground.
