More than 90 Fleeing Cholera Outbreak Perish in Mozambique Boat Mishap
Over 90 individuals attempting to escape a cholera outbreak in Mozambique met their untimely demise when their vessel capsized off the coast of Nampula, local sources revealed on Sunday.
The ill-fated journey began as the passengers embarked from Lunga with the destination set for Mozambique Island. However, tragedy struck as their boat succumbed to the unforgiving waters along Mozambique’s northern shoreline.
According to authorities, the vessel, typically designed to accommodate a maximum of 100 occupants, was overloaded with approximately 130 individuals onboard, exacerbating the perilous situation.
Reports from the AIM news agency, quoting a spokesperson from the maritime authority, suggest that the boat likely foundered when confronted by treacherous waves.
The somber incident unfolded against the backdrop of Mozambique grappling with its most significant cholera outbreak in the past quarter-century, as highlighted by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Since its onset in September 2022, the outbreak has afflicted over 37,000 individuals, compounding the nation’s ongoing humanitarian challenges.
