Momentum Builds for Kamala Harris as Fresh Polls Show Lead Over Trump
As the 2024 U.S. presidential race intensifies, Vice President Kamala Harris is gaining momentum, according to recent polls. With her nominating convention on the horizon, Harris has emerged as the frontrunner against former President Donald Trump in head-to-head matchups.
An ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll reveals Harris leading Trump by a slight margin, reflecting a competitive race. The poll, conducted by Langer Research Associates with Ipsos, shows Harris ahead among all adults by 50%-45%, with a narrower 49%-45% lead among registered voters. Among likely voters, her advantage widens to 51%-45%.
Harris also leads in a CBS News poll, where she edges out Trump nationally by 51% to 48%, though the two are tied in key battleground states. However, the polls indicate that Trump maintains a strong lead on critical issues like the economy and immigration, areas where he holds a 9-point and 10-point advantage, respectively.
Despite these challenges, Harris’s candidacy is resonating with voters. Over 50% of respondents view her as qualified for the presidency, compared to 47% for Trump. Harris also surpasses Trump on attributes such as physical health, mental sharpness, honesty, and trustworthiness.
The polling data also suggests that Democrats might benefit from a two-way race, as Harris/Walz and Trump/Vance are nearly tied in a five-way matchup that includes third-party candidates. Notably, enthusiasm for Harris is rising among Democrats, with 60% of her supporters expressing strong backing, a significant increase from President Joe Biden’s figures last month.
As the race progresses, Harris’s position as the first female presidential candidate also garners attention, with 38% of Americans viewing it as a positive development. Meanwhile, voter satisfaction with a Harris presidency has grown, with 50% expressing enthusiasm or satisfaction, compared to 45% for Trump.
