Mixed Response to NLC, TUC Strike Sweeping Through Nigerian States

In a sweeping move, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) initiated a nationwide strike, showcasing varied levels of compliance across states. The strike, triggered by the assault on NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, resulted in a shutdown of vital services in some regions, while others experienced partial or no compliance.

The directives resonated strongly in Lagos, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Kebbi, and Edo, with banks, schools, and courts closing their doors. However, Kano witnessed a complete shutdown, leading to the suspension of qualifying examinations, while Osogbo in Osun State beefed up security to prevent disorder.

In contrast, Imo reported partial compliance as banks opened for business. Enugu and Abuja saw workers defy the strike, with assurances from labour leaders of a stronger turnout in the coming days.

The rift extended to the nation’s universities, as ASUU called for participation, while CONUA urged members to abstain. The organised labour cited issues like outstanding salary arrears, unjust worker classifications, and non-compliance with the minimum wage act as key grievances.

The strike, sanctioned during the National Executive Council meeting on November 13, 2023, primarily addresses the government’s alleged neglect of worker concerns, including minimum wage, insecurity, corruption, and governance issues.

Key sectors like Maritime, Petroleum, and Education witnessed significant disruptions, with PENGASSAN joining the industrial action. The impact rippled across businesses, schools, and government offices, shaping a nationwide call for attention to the plight of workers.
