Miracle Hoax: Woman Confesses to Staged Healings with Pastor’s Scheme
In a story that reads like a movie script, a woman in her 50s, Madam Alimot (surname withheld), has lifted the lid on a scheme where she and others connived with a pastor to stage fake healings at a church in the South West. The act involved elaborate theatrics, with participants pretending to have severe ailments that were miraculously cured after a sprinkle of water and a dab of oil. The result? Jubilant churchgoers believed they had witnessed genuine miracles, rushing to the altar to drop cash donations. But behind the scenes, it was all a well-rehearsed performance.
Madam Alimot confessed that her part in the act involved traveling from Ibadan to a neighboring state to perform staged healings for a meager payment of N7,000, which barely covered her transportation costs. Her role was exposed when she involved the nephew of a tenant in the scheme, leading to her arrest by the Oluyole Security Surveillance Team in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The scheme unfolded like this: participants would gather at the church to play various roles, pretending to be deaf, blind, or afflicted with other ailments. When the pastor “healed” them through prayer and anointing, the congregation would erupt in joy, often contributing large sums of money. Alimot’s role typically earned her between N1,500 and N2,000 after transportation costs were deducted, leaving her with just enough to get by.
The scheme unraveled when a 17-year-old boy, involved in one of the staged healings, reported threats from Alimot after he allegedly exposed her secret. The teenager was taken to a church where he pretended to be deaf, but his acting skills drew suspicion from the pastor. When the church service concluded, the teenager was given only N500 for transportation back to Ibadan, and Alimot began issuing threats after the teenager returned to his uncle’s house and shared his experience.
During the investigation, authorities discovered that the staged healings involved not only the church but also a wider syndicate operating in and out of Oyo State. The case was transferred to the Sanyo police station in the state police command for further investigation.
Madam Alimot’s confession reveals a murky world of deceit, where desperate individuals engage in staged miracles for meager compensation, duping unsuspecting worshippers into giving away their hard-earned money. As the investigation continues, the case serves as a cautionary tale about the lengths some will go to in pursuit of profit, and a reminder to be wary of too-good-to-be-true miracles.
