Minna Protest Rattles Tinubu Administration, President Gives Orders on Food Prices
In response to the mass protest in Minna, Niger State, where citizens expressed their discontent over escalating food prices and a deteriorating economic situation, the Bola Tinubu administration finds itself under pressure. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed this information after a high-level meeting of the Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention held on Tuesday in Abuja. During the briefing, he conveyed the president’s deep concern about the challenges faced by Nigerians, specifically referencing the Minna protest.
Mr. Idris outlined the government’s plan of action, stating, “The government is taking measures to ensure that Nigerians have relief in terms of the availability of food on the table.” The ongoing committee meeting, set to continue until Thursday, is actively considering significant measures to alleviate the current dire situation.
The minister disclosed, “Some of these measures involve unlocking the foods stored in the National Food Reserves and engaging major millers and commodity traders to open up their stores for intervention.” The government aims to collaborate with stakeholders to make food more readily available to the public.
Acknowledging the challenges created by high costs and currency depreciation, Mr. Idris emphasized, “The president has directed that the government needs to step in to stem this tide. Government will not fold its arms and see the way Nigerians are suffering in terms of the availability of these food items.”
Key figures present at the committee meeting included the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, Central Bank Governor, Yemi Cardoso, Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Agriculture, Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, and Ministers of State for Agriculture, Sabi Abdullahi, and FCT, Mariya Mahmoud. The government aims to issue a comprehensive statement on its position after concluding the ongoing discussions.
