Minister Umahi Responds to Sowore’s Viral Footage at FCT Police Command
Minister of Works, David Umahi, has addressed a video circulated by activist Omoyele Sowore, which depicted their encounter at the Federal Capital Territory Police Command on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the minister’s media office on February 25, 2026, the video appeared intended to publicly confront Umahi over an issue already before the authorities. The allegations cited in the footage, originally made by Mrs. Tracy Ohiri, have been in the public domain since last year and involve claims of assault and unpaid campaign materials.
The statement noted that these allegations have been inconsistent over time and widely scrutinized by the public. It emphasized that the minister did not use law enforcement to pursue personal matters. Rather, the Nigeria Police Force acted on a petition submitted by Umahi’s lawyer, resulting in the complainant’s arrest and the minister’s standard invitation to provide a statement as part of the investigation.
Umahi’s media office accused Sowore of attempting to “dramatize” the lawful process, describing it as a form of performative activism designed to attract attention. The statement confirmed that the minister chose not to engage in what it termed theatrics and disengaged calmly from the situation.
“The matter remains under police investigation, where facts will determine the outcome,” the statement said. Umahi reiterated his commitment to transparency, due process, and the rule of law, affirming that his focus remains on delivering key infrastructure projects nationwide.
The statement was issued by Francis Nwaze, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister on Media.
