Minimum Wage: Strike Continues Pending Tuesday Review Meeting – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that the ongoing nationwide strike will persist despite reaching an agreement with the Federal Government during Monday’s negotiations.

In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, the NLC emphasized that the strike, which has significantly impacted the nation’s economy, will remain in effect until the union’s organs convene on Tuesday to review the resolutions from Monday’s meeting.

“Until we hear from our organs at our meeting scheduled for today, June 4, we are still on strike,” the statement read.

Following a six-hour discussion with organized labour leaders in Abuja, the Federal Government reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to increasing the minimum wage from the current N60,000.

The agreement highlighted that the President is dedicated to establishing a National Minimum Wage exceeding N60,000. It was also noted that a Tripartite Committee would meet daily for the next week to finalize the new wage.

The organized labour agreed to convene immediate meetings with its organs to consider the new offer. Additionally, it was assured that no worker would face repercussions for participating in the strike.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the Federal Government by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha. Representing the organized labour were NLC President Joe Ajaero and Trade Union Congress President Festus Osifo.
