Minimum Wage: “Betray Workers for Personal Gain, Face Consequences” – NLC Warns State Leaders
In the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s recent approval of the N70,000 National Minimum Wage Act, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to state council leaders, cautioning them against betraying workers for personal gain. Despite the passing of the new wage law, many states and even the Federal Government have yet to implement the changes, with discussions on the consequential adjustments still ongoing.
To address the challenges ahead, the NLC has commenced training for its state council leaders. The aim is to equip them with strategies to ensure the smooth implementation of the new wage and prevent the missteps of the past. At a two-day workshop for the Northern Zone, NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized the importance of integrity and responsibility, urging leaders to prioritize the welfare of workers.
Ajaero highlighted that the full success of the minimum wage law hinges on its actual implementation at all levels of government. He warned that leaders who compromise for personal interests would face severe consequences, saying, “The overall outcome will depend on the choices you make. Lead responsibly for the benefit of workers, or face the repercussions.”
The NLC’s training program is part of a broader effort to ensure the benefits of the new minimum wage reach workers across the country, with a focus on effective leadership, communication, and resilience in the face of challenges.
