Military Thwarts N1.2 Billion Crude Oil Theft as Nigeria’s Oil Production Surges

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters announced a significant victory in the battle against crude oil theft. Over the past two weeks, the country’s troops successfully intercepted stolen crude oil valued at an astonishing N1.2 billion. This accomplishment coincides with a remarkable upswing in Nigeria’s oil production capacity during the month of September.

Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, shared this groundbreaking news with the press in Abuja during a briefing held on Thursday. In his address, General Buba made a resolute commitment to incapacitate terrorists who seek to carry out small-scale attacks on vulnerable targets.

During their recent operations, Nigerian troops demonstrated their unwavering dedication to safeguarding the nation. They eliminated 73 terrorists, apprehended 182 individuals involved in criminal activities, and heroically rescued 68 hostages in just one week. These actions played a pivotal role in thwarting the designs of these nefarious elements.

General Buba emphasized, “The ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations have prevented these evil elements from accomplishing their strategic objectives. The Military will continue to degrade their ability to carry out small-scale attacks, which are intended to create panic in local communities.”

In addition to these notable achievements, the troops identified and obliterated 63 illegal refining sites. These sites contained 15 dugout pits, 45 boats, 87 storage tanks, 128 cooking ovens, one pumping machine, and four outboard engines. Furthermore, the troops managed to apprehend 14 suspected oil thieves.

The recovered assets and confiscated contraband were of significant value. This includes 962,500 liters of stolen crude oil, 35,420 liters of illegally refined AGO, 38,450 liters of DPK, and 45,000 liters of PMS, with an estimated cumulative value of N1,212,046,140.

This substantial victory against oil theft is a noteworthy achievement, considering that this problem has been a persistent challenge for Nigeria, substantially affecting the country’s oil production capacity. As a result of the improved efforts to combat oil theft, Nigeria’s oil production capacity saw a remarkable increase in September, surging to 1.7 million barrels per day from the 1.1 million barrels per day recorded in August.

This significant progress is a testament to the dedication and valor of the Nigerian military in safeguarding the nation’s valuable oil resources and ensuring economic stability.
